What is Swartzmiller Carboard Art?  In late 2019, while waiting for glued picture frames to set, I took the cardboard that I had the frames lying on and ripped off a couple of small pieces. I grabbed some acrylic paint and did a quick wine painting.  The first thing I noticed was the feel on how smooth the paint went on.  Although the cardboard wasn’t primed, it did hold the colors.  Cardboard, unlike canvas, adds its own character to the art: corrugation, creases and the advertising on the cardboard.

I did a series of 12 paintings on my new “Cardboard Art” medium and put them on aBay for $.98.  All 12 sold in the10 day auction, actually eBay bidders have bought over 750 cardboard paintings in a row since late 2019.

The cardboard painting is then glued to a back piece of cardboard with the front of the painting receiving several coats of polyurethane; thus the painting is encapsulated for protection, longevity and enhancing the colors.

More about Mike Swartzmiller:   An impressionist WV artist that creates original artwork on a variety of surfaces: stretched canvas, hardboard, cardboard, recycled ceiling tiles, pizza boxes and more?  Mike also creates wire sculptures.  Mike’s work is displayed and sold from coffee shops in Pittsburgh, to galleries in WV to beach houses in Aruba. In 2020, Mike's paintings sold in every US state except Hawaii.  His favorite painting subjects are; nudes, cats, still life wines and florals, abstracts and landscapes.

Painting Style:  A self-proclaimed painterly impressionist, Mike's works reflect the artists of the Impressionist and Post -Impressionist periods with the artists beyond traditional styles, Monet, Matisse, Renoir, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Picasso, Dali, Degas, Raphael, Chagall, Miro, Pollock, Klimt, Kandinsky, Warhol, Munch, etc.  Although most paintings are in the impressionist style, many cross over and are a mixture of modern, pop, brute, street art, folk, outsider, abstract, expressionism, cubism, surrealism.

  "Painterly impressionist" paintings are comprised of strong brushstrokes and unique color value combinations. Besides the visible brushstrokes, impressionists paint in a somewhat loose style, unlike the stay-in-the lines of traditional styles.  Some think that impressionists just paint fast and loose, but there is a method that requires time to master, so that the viewer can connect and relate to the work.
