Welcome to a Happy-campers2 Auction!

Up for auction, and your consideration, is this Custom Coleman 228F Lantern!

NOTE: Please read all of the text in the description!

When we get old lanterns, we can either try to restore them, use them for parts donors or, if pretty beat up looking, do some custom work. The paint on the fount of this lantern was in such poor condition, as was the porcelain on the vent, we decided to have the fount and vent treated with Chromex. We don't know if you agree, but we think it looks fantastic!

Coleman produced the Model 228 lantern from 1928 to 1979. The one in this auction was originally made in October of 1971. To be honest, it was not in good condition when we received it. Rather than restore it to original condition, we decided to make a custom 228F. The lantern was disassembled and sent to a professional that media blasted all of the paint, porcelain and tarnish from all parts. Then, 1300 degree Chromex was applied.

Chromex is a high heat ceramic coating used primarily by hot rodders to give their exhaust headers a chrome look without the chrome changing color. On a lantern fount and vent it has the look of chrome with an orange peal affect. The burner frame has also been treated with Shiny Silver Cerakote and, as stated, will withstand heat of 1300 degrees. As Chromex and Cerakote is a very thin cermaic coatings, any imperfections in the steel on the fount will show. This fount has a little pitting. The vent has some minor imperfections.

All parts have been cleaned or replaced as needed on this 2228F. When this lantern was reassembled, it received a new fuel cap gasket, generator and a new custom Coleman logo. The lantern has an era correct red letter made in USA Pyrex globe. The pump leather has been oiled. The lantern has been fueled. It pumps up and holds pressure. When the valve wheel is opened, there is the familiar hiss and gurgle of a working lantern!

Please note: As hard as we try to get the check valve cleaned up, they will sometimes still leak unless the valve stem is closed, as Coleman literature states.

Note: Again, as Chromex and Cerakote are a very this application, any minor imperfections, or rough spots, show.

This lantern reminds us of the days when Coleman nickel plated the vent as well as the fount!
