WHOA!! New to the Market and Freshly Restored
100 Point AMCA 1945 Harley Davidson FL (Not many machines can achieve this level of award, This means its perfect!!)
Awarded 100 points at Dixon AMCA meet on June 13, 2025! Congratulations to Larry Ramos the builder/restorer.
This is a 1945 Harley Davidson FL motorcycle that has undergone a concours restoration/rebuild. The 1945 Harley Davidson FL is listed in The Harley Davidson Data Book as a Special Sport Solo; 74 cubic inch high-compression Knucklehead OHV V-Twin with a 4 speed transmission. Price of $465 and 619 produced. Color offered of Grey.
Comments from the builder:
After purchasing the frame and engine it took 34 years to purchase every O.E. part necessary to complete the project.
The bike features many one- or two-year parts that are only found on wartime civilian production motorcycles that were offered by the motor company. Civilian production was limited to essential use, making the number of units sold quite low. The frame and fork main leg are correct for 1944 and 1945. The fork spring leg is a number 13, also correct for ’45.
The cylinders and heads are all from 1945 and as visible in the photos, they bear the raised date code verifying that. The valve seats in the heads were given a grind with the correct angles to seal all combustion in the chambers. The valve guides are all new and while they were out, the rocker covers were parkerized and the oil feed lines were checked to make sure there were no obstructions to the oiling system. The carburetor is the correct Linkert M-35 and is finished in black as it should be and all adjusting screws and needles are cadmium plated, as Linkert had their own source for cadmium plating. The manifold and nuts are parkerized as are the pushrod tubes and rocker shaft nuts. This is all correct for 1945 production. The lifter blocks and oil pump are painted white as cadmium plating and silver paint was reserved for the war effort. The transmission gear case is also date coded 1945 as is the kick starter cover.
The front fender was an original war production part. It required a masters touch to be brought back to original Harley specs. When this much work is being put into the front fender and mounting the fit up is great and installing it is easy because it was made to be that way.
The gas tanks were in good condition but the left side has a crease in the outer skin, so I had to open it up to metal finish the damage out, then reweld the area. The tank badges were metal finished and painted Navy Blue, an option for ’45, with the red lettering and ivory spears. The tanks along with the fenders are painted the original grey as this was the only color offered that year. The spokes and nipples are correct as are the two Kelsey- Hayes rims. The hubs have been fully rebuilt with new bearings and inner spacers. The inner and outer primary are both O.E. and were hand fitted to each other before being fitted to the engine and frame. You’ll notice that the outer primary inspection cover mounts at 3 and 9 o’clock, which is correct for a 1945.
The rear fender has had all mounting doublers removed to metal finish the crown and after weld through primer all were spot welded back on just like they were originally. Both front and rear fenders have been epoxy primed because it is a direct to metal product, cured and sanded followed by urethane primer. Both gas caps were epoxy primed black and are painted black.
The engine and transmission were both built by a machinist who has been building Harley flatheads, knuckleheads and panheads since the 70’s. All internals in both are O.E. and the flywheel shafts have all been replaced. The connecting rods have been rebuilt and new pistons, pins and rings were installed. The transmission has all new bearings and seals. The main shaft, secondary shaft, and the entire gear cluster is O.E. and will provide trouble-free service.
This concours restoration has been completed by professionals and was judged to a perfect100 points on the AMCA judging scale. It gets no better than this. This bike has completed a 100 mile break in period by an accomplished rider/tuner. It is currently in excellent tune and ready for the next break-in mileage.
MILEAGE: Working odometer showing 75 miles after adjustment. (gear replaced during break in) 100 Break-in miles have been completed.
PAINT: The bike is now in final paint and assembly. All parts were fitted up prior to primer and then finished with quality paint of the correct grey. Paint was prepped and applied by a highly qualified painter with quality products.
SHEET METAL: Sheet metal is all original Harley Davidson. All sheet metal and iron on this motorcycle has been correctly prepared and rebuilt according to original assembly standards by a quality motorcycle metal smith.
CHROME: No chrome on this year motorcycle. All plated components are correct for year of manufacture, plating completed by quality shops.
MECHANICAL: All mechanical work completed by a master Harley Davidson powerplant builder using the best parts and complemented by great machine shops. A 100 mile break in has been accomplished with numerous tweaks to provide and excellent ride and consistent performance.
WHEELS & TIRES: Rims are correct for the year Kelsey Hayes with correctly painted steel rims and Cadmium plated spokes and nipples. Front tire is Coker Firestone 500 X 16 Rear tire is Coker Firestone 500 X 16
TITLE: This motorcycle has a clean TN Title Engine # 45 FL 1573 Frame # N/A Belly # 45-1731 Matching
New to the market after a multi year concourse restoration is this beautiful 1945 Harley Davidson FL 74” Knucklehead finished in Squadron Grey. This motorcycle has been in the current owners possession (an expert in early knuckleheads) since the early 80’s and was just finished in the last month. Every detail of this motorcycle down to every nut and bolt has been meticulously massaged, painted , and plated restoring exactly what would have come out of the Harley Davidson Factory.
It currently has approximately 100 miles of break in and shakedown runs, it’s absolutely perfect cosmetically and mechanically and is ready for a new home.
