An Untouched, Unmolested Ironhead — The Rarest Kind of Sportster

Fellas, I've been around Harleys a long time. I bought my first one in 1987—almost 40 years ago—

and I can tell you straight up: you almost never, ever find a stock Ironhead Sportster. 

They’re the most heavily modified motorcycle Harley ever produced. 

Before most of them even leave the dealership, people bolt on drag pipes, big bars, chrome covers, seats, bags—you name it.

But not this one.

This spectacular 1982 XLH 1000 comes from a collector friend of mine in Ohio who had nine pristine classics—including five Ironhead Sportsters. 

He was an Ironhead aficionado just like I am.

 In fact, the New England Motorcycle Museum’s logo features a ’77 Ironhead Café Racer engine. 

These machines have always had a raw, mechanical soul that hooked me as a kid

and this one is the cleanest, most untouched example I’ve seen in years.

Original Paint Stock Survivor Practically Unheard Of

Nearly everything you see on this bike is original Harley-Davidson factory equipment, including:

• Original “ham can” air cleaner

• Original exhaust system

• Original wheels

• Original bars

• Original turn signals

• Original saddle

• Original reflectors

• Original cables

• Original aluminum side covers

• Original brake and clutch levers

• Original Milwaukee Edition black-and-orange paint w/ white pinstripe

• Original American-flag points cover

• Original HD tank decals

• Original brushed aluminum fork lowers

• Original Sportster gas cap

• Original gauge cluster w/ 18,590 miles

• Original DOT warning label (rarely survives 40 years)

• Original switch housings with still-legible logos

• Original fork tube chrome—absolutely pristine

The only non-factory parts on the bike are the mirrors. It came to us without them, so a fresh set was added.

This is as close to a time capsule Ironhead as you’re ever going to find.

Collector Quality • Minimal Work Needed • Only 7 Hours of Shop Labor

Most Ironheads take 100–150 hours of labor for us to resurrect to museum condition.

 I’ve bought dozens over the years, and I typically tell people it’s a “labor of love” because restoring one usually takes 1–2 years of parts hunting, wrenching, polishing, and headaches.

Not this one.

This is, without exaggeration, the shortest work order we’ve ever had on an Ironhead in 15 years.

 Only 7 hours of labor were required:

Mechanical Service Completed

• Cleaned fuel tank

• Removed, cleaned, and rebuilt carburetor

• Replaced intake seals

• Replaced oil lines

• Engine oil service

• Primary/transmission oil change

• Replaced rear brake master cylinder + brake flush

• Cleaned starter button, starter circuit, and all electrical connections

All of this was preventative maintenance. The bike was already in exceptional condition.

Detail Work – Another 7 Hours 

(Normally 8+ Even on Brand New 2025 Harleys)

The detail sheet was just as shockingly short:

• Full steam clean & hand wash

• Cleaned tires and rims

• Polished exhaust

• Polished engine cases and aluminum

• Fresh wax & buff on tank and fenders

All the chrome on this motorcycle is original and beautiful. This thing sparkles in the sunlight. 

The paint shines like a new bike. Seat upholstery is mint. 

The fork tubes look like they just rolled off the showroom floor.

The tires were replaced by the previous owner and still have 90% tread front and rear.

This Ironhead lived most of its life indoors in his private museum with his other five Ironheads and three sidecar rigs.

Condition – A True 9 to 10 Out of 10

On overall originality and preservation, this Sportster is the cleanest example we’ve had in years. 

The bike fires right up, idles smoothly, and runs exactly as it looks—tight, tuned, and crisp.

Flaws? Very Few.

It’s nearly 50 years old, so expect minor patina:

• A tiny blemish on the paint near the seat

• A couple very small chips on the tank paint

• Tiny chip on the front fender

That’s it. The kind of minor, honest aging you want on an original-paint classic. 

I would never repaint this bike—it's far too rare and too well preserved.

Ride It, Show It, or Museum It — This One’s a Diamond

You will not find a cleaner, more original, more honest survivor Ironhead anywhere. These bikes only look this good when:

1. They’ve lived their entire life indoors

2. They were cherished by an enthusiast

3. They were never crashed, never chopped, never customized

4. They’ve never been allowed to deteriorate

This one checks every box.

I’m not exaggerating when I say I would confidently sell this bike to my best friend. It is Kaplan America Approved.

It is important you have at least a basic mechanical knowledge before purchasing and operating a classic motorcycle.

Due to our backlog, we cannot perform any additional service work or modifications on your motorcycle after the sale (ie; adding a light kit, different tires, etc.)
